Sheriff deserves Compton’s thanks

Re “Calmer times in a city plagued by guns,” Oct. 29
Your headline is just silly; at least the story noted that crimes were down because the bad guys are “all in prison.” Gang violence is committed by gang members, not by guns. Put them in jail and the violence stops. Seize guns and the violence continues.

Thank you to Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca and his team of deputies, who have helped to bring gun deaths in Compton to a new low. The sheriff and his deputies know how important it is to engage the community in their efforts.
With Sheriff’s Capt. William M. Ryan’s realization that a key element to crime reduction is youth intervention, the youth center on Alameda Street is a great place for young people to do their homework or play sports -- and ensure that the next generation of Compton kids have a safer neighborhood.
Many nonprofit organizations have been working to return Compton to its early roots of a friendly, family neighborhood. Thank you to our sheriff for helping to make this happen.
