JIM DE BOOM -- Community & Clubs

DONATIONS TOTALING $30,000: For more than 40 years, the Newport

Beach-Corona del Mar Kiwanis Club has provided the avenue for local

business men and women who want to help improve the lives of others in

their community through service, said club president Nancy Bell. On

behalf of the club, Bell made donations totaling $30,000 last week to

Newport Harbor High School, Corona del Mar High School, Laguna Unified

Athletic Foundation, Laguna Beach Police Explorers Program, UCI Water

Polo, the American Heart Assn. and Boy Scout Troop 90.

The club accomplished this goal though its major fund-raiser, the

Pacific Coast Triathlon, presented this year by Mazda.

“The NB-CdM Kiwanis Club vows to make a difference in our wonderful

world through its donations to youth-oriented projects,” Bell added.

Congratulations to one and all!

BETWEEN 21 to 39: If you are between the ages of 21 to 39, you are invited to the Hoag Hospital 552 Club Juniors monthly mixer at Muldoon’s

Irish Pub in Fashion Island at 5:52 p.m. Thursday. According to Stacy de

Boom, club secretary, you meet young professionals from around the area

and learn about the 552 Juniors Club social and service activities. The

Juniors’ next event will be a holiday party and auction on Dec. 21 at the

Balboa Pavilion. Reservations are not required for the mixer.

Information: (949) 574-7212.

REUNION DINNER: Past members of the Rotary Clubs of Newport Balboa and

Costa Mesa are invited to a special reunion dinner at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday

at the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club. The program will feature the

inaugural Gaylord Wagner Memorial Joke-Off with former club member Frank

Hall as the master of ceremonies and jokesters Gordon Bowley (Costa Mesa

Rotary Club), Jack Connole (Newport-Balboa Rotary Club) and Jim Villers

(Newport-Irvine Rotary Club).

Wagner, who died earlier this year, was a founding jokester of the

Newport-Balboa Joke-Off along with Hall, Bowley and Villers, according to

Wendell Sawyer, club president. This program should be 30 minutes of

nonstop laughs, he added. Judges of the jokes in past years have included

three IRS agents, three morticians and three proctologists.

Former members who are expected to attend the dinner include Steve

Phair, Bud Brandt, Tom O’Brien, Vic Yack, Bob Goodwin, Stan Cole, Ed

Decker, Gary Pomery, Dan Hoover, Frank Smith, Ron Park, Sandy Wadell,

Curt Hermelin and Pat Michaels. Past Rotarians are asked to R.S.V.P. to

(949) 660-8665 by 5 p.m. Monday.

THEY WILL BE MISSED: Members of the Costa Mesa-Newport Harbor Lions

Club were shocked and saddened to learn of the death of past president

Marty Dales, a Costa Mesa optometrist, who died Oct. 20 and was buried at

the Riverside National Cemetery. Dales was a life member of the Lions

Club, a Melvin Jones Fellow, and served in World War II as a captain in

the U.S. Marine Corps. Dales is survived by his wife, Vivian, and

daughters Connie, Christine and Susan.

Members of the Newport-Balboa Rotary Club will miss longtime member

Wally Edwards of Lido Island, who died Oct. 23 at home surrounded by his

wife, Phyllis, son Don and daughters Mary Orsak and Robin Maxey. A

Rotarian since 1965, Edwards joined the Newport-Balboa club in 1985.

Services will be held Nov. 19 at Lafayette Orlinda Presbyterian Church --

which Edwards and his wife helped to found years ago.

My condolences to the families. Both will be missed by their fellow

club members, friends and the communities they served so well.

WORTH REPEATING: From Greg Kelley, president of the Newport-Mesa

Irvine Interfaith Council in the “Thought for the Day” -- “Success comes

in cans. Failure comes in can’ts.”
