Sailors win in the eighth

Newport Harbor High’s Sailors got a complete game effort from pitcher
Ryan Torrey and a run-scoring double in the eighth inning to send
Aliso Niguel away in Sea View League baseball Thursday, 2-1,
The victory improves the Sailors to 4-10, 2-5 with the Pride of
the Coast Tournament on tap Saturday morning at Corona del Mar High,
starting at 11 a.m.
Coach Joel Desguin was obviously pleased with the finish on
Thursday as the Sailors came up with seven hits, including doubles by
Torrey and Joe Cantarella.
“We kept it close and today we got the hits when we needed them,”
said Desguin. “And, we executed when we needed it.”
The primary execution came in the top of the seventh inning when
with runners on first and third and two outs, an Aliso Niguel batter
drove a long fly to left, only to find Cantarella coming up with a
stellar inning-ending catch to hold the Wolverines off.
Harbor scored in the fifth to tie the game a 1-1 when Cantarella
doubled, moved to third when Matt Erickson got aboard on an error,
and scored on a fielder’s choice.
Ryan Heenan got the winning rally started in the eighth with a
one-out single and moved to second on a base hit by Karo Makserjian.
Then Torrey ended it with his double off the left field wall on an
0-2 count.
Torrey struck out four, walked four and allowed one walk.
