Remembering those that fell two years ago

Newport-Mesa residents will be joining the rest of the country today
as they hold memorials for those who died during the Sept. 11, 2001
terrorist attacks and those who aided victims.
Costa Mesa Fire and Police officials will be holding an early
morning event, at Costa Mesa Fire Station No. 5 at the corner of Fair
Drive and Vanguard Way, at 6:45 a.m.
Corona del Mar High School will be holding an assembly to honor
the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
Newport Beach Mayor Steven Bromberg and Newport Beach Fire Chief
Tim Riley will take part in the ceremony. They will also honor U.S.
Marine Cpl. Bryan Bergey, who recently returned from Iraq.
The student assembly will begin in the Big Gym with a moment of
silence at 9:11 a.m. It will include a memorial presentation and a
presentation for winners of an essay and poetry writing class.
The assembly is part of Unity Week at the school, sponsored by the
Tolerance Among People group.
Orange Coast College’s Associated Students will sponsor a Sept. 11
memorial wall on campus.
The wall will be in the lobby of the college’s Student Center
Building. It will contain photos and materials to honor the people
who lost their lives two years ago in the 9/11 attack.
It will also contain photos from OCC’s 9/11 memorial events held
on campus in 2001 and 2002. The wall will be on display throughout
the day.
Students, staff members and community members are invited to visit
the display and leave their written messages at the wall.
Newport Beach city officials will not be holding a planned
flagpole memorial.
Instead, they are asking that residents remember the day “each in
their own way,” City Manager Homer Bludau said. “It is through the
community continuing with volunteerism and the spirit of giving for
the betterment of our fellow man that those who perished on Sept. 11,
2001 may best be remembered.”
A memorial will be held at St. James Episcopal Church. The event
will run from noon to 12:30 p.m. The church is at 3209 Via Lido,
Newport Beach. For more information on this observance, contact
church administrator Cindy Drennan at (949) 675-0210.
