Corona del Mar knocks off Huntington Beach in four

Corona del Mar High’s girls volleyball team opened its season with a
four-game nonleague victory over visiting Huntington Beach, 25-19,
25-15, 20-25, 27-25, on Thursday.
The Sea Kings, ranked No. 4 in CIF Southern Section Division
III-A, received 14 kills from junior Lindsey Ensign and 13 from
junior Jordan Smith.
Senior setter Ashley Bill had a game-high 27 assists to go with 16
digs by junior Breanne Ogden and three service aces by senior Lauren
Snell.
Lightning downed, 12-5
* WATER POLO: Sage Hill School seniors Antony Milovantsev and
Tyler Youngblood scored two goals each, but the Lightning boys water
polo team lost its season opener to Rancho Alamitos, 12-5, at Corona
del Mar High Thursday night.
John Neff also scored a goal for Sage Hill, which was down, 6-5,
with two minutes to play in the third quarter, then Rancho pulled
away. The Lightning will return to action Saturday at noon at Webb.
Sage Hill wins opener
* VOLLEYBALL: The Sage Hill School girls volleyball team won its
season opener with a 25-18, 25-8, 25-10 victory over California
School for the Deaf in Riverside Thursday.
Sophomore Cat Dailey led Sage Hill with seven kills and sophomore
Vista Murphy contributed five, while sophomore Sophia Hillgren
produced 11 service aces.
The Lightning will return to action Saturday at the Southern
California Tournament of Champions hosted by El Modena.
CdM’s McKitterick shines
* GOLF: In her first high school golf match ever, sophomore
transfer Katie McKitterick led the way for the Corona del Mar High
girls golf team in its 234-239 nonleague victory over host Woodbridge
-- the season opener for both teams -- Thursday at the par-36 Rancho
San Joaquin Golf Course in Irvine.
McKitterick, a three-sport star who earned Girls Athlete of the
Year honors last year at Sage Hill School, shot 41 to earn medalist
honors.
Katie Albright and Veronica Friedman each fired 44 for CdM (1-0),
which also got support from Caitlin McDonald (52) and Maggie Nelson
(53).
Newport edges Dana Hills
* GOLF: Newport Harbor’s girls golf team opened its season
Thursday with a 239-240 nonleague victory over visiting Dana Hills at
the par-34 Santa Ana Country Club.
Natalie Draganza and Kayleigh Horn each shot 42 to lead Newport
(1-0), followed by two 51s from Katie McKay and Marissa Zehnder. Erin
Callahan shot 53.
Dana Hills’ Jackie Kazarian shot a 1-over-par 35 to earn medalist
honors.
Anteaters remember 9/11
* SOCCER: A ceremony for the Sept. 11 tragedy of two years ago
will be held at 6:30 p.m. tonight prior to the UC Irvine men’s soccer
game against Loyola Marymount at Anteater Stadium.
Numerous police and firefighters will be there to participate in
the tribute on the field, as part of a collaboration of the Kids
Helping Kids Program, Orange County Fire Authority, and Irvine Police
Department.
The night also kicks off an initiative called Heroes Wear Helmets
that encourages wearing a helmet when biking, skateboarding, or
riding a scooter.
Bicycles, scooters, skateboards, and helmets will be raffled off
at halftime.
Sailors open with road win
* FIELD HOCKEY: Newport Harbor’s field hockey team defeated host
Harvard-Westlake, 3-1, in the nonleague opener for both teams
Thursday on artificial turf.
Senior Dana Owad scored the first goal of the game on a corner off
an assist from senior Jillianne Whitfield before Harvard-Westlake
tied it, 1-1, four minutes before halftime.
Ashley Harrison scored the game-winning goal with 8:20 left in the
game off an back-handed assist from Kristen Jendrusina and Reese
Simmons capped the scoring with a goal four minutes later on a pass
from Harrison.
Amanda Wittman made four saves for Newport (1-0), which lost to
Harvard-Westlake, 1-0, in a shootout in last season’s Tournament of
Champions final.
Mustangs defeat ‘Runners
* TENNIS: Costa Mesa High’s girls tennis team opened its season
Thursday with a 13-5 Golden West League win over Saddleback.
Mesa (1-0) didn’t lose a set in doubles as the No. 1 team of
Ashley Harrison and Qyuen Nguyen swept, 6-2, 6-0, 6-2, followed by
Maria Garcia and Uyen Le’s 6-0, 6-3, 6-0 triumph at No. 2. Hong-An
Nguyen and partner Leah Le claimed a 6-3, 6-0, 6-2 sweep.
Evelyn Wallace lost just one game at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0,
while Paulina Rodriguez won a set and Jasmine Mathieson came on
strong in the final two sets.
Orange Coast wins by forfeit
* GOLF: Host Irvine Valley College had to forfeit because it
couldn’t field enough players, so the Orange Coast College women’s
golf team automatically tallied a win in a Orange Empire Conference
match Wednesday that also included Santiago and Saddleback on the
par-71 Oak Creek Golf Club in Irvine.
OCC still played and shot 354 while Santiago fired a 363 and
Saddleback a 343. Lorraine Fernando and Laura Sumpter each shot 85s
for Coast (1-2, 1-0 in the OEC) with Ashlee Kendall (89) and Joanne
Durocher (95) rounding out the scoring.
