Interfaith meeting location changed
The location has been moved for a talk by Los Angeles Times
religion reporter William Lobdell to the Newport Mesa Irvine
Interfaith Council.
Lobdell, a former editor of the Daily Pilot and an award-winning
reporter for the Times, will discuss “Challenges facing the Faith
Community.”
The Wednesday meeting will be held at the New Millennium Church,
4500 Campus Drive No. 118, Newport Beach.
The event will begin at 11:45 a.m. and is expected to end by 1:30
p.m. Lunch is $7.50 per person with reservation or $10 at the door
without reservation.
Reservations are due by Tuesday. To reserve a spot, or for other

Aquatic Center holds fund-raiser
The Newport Aquatic Center will hold its Fifth annual Aloha Casino
Night fund-raiser Sept. 20 from 6 to 10 p.m.
All proceeds from the event will go to youth rowing and paddling
programs at the club. Newport Aquatic Center has competitive juniors
programs in both sports.
The evening will feature blackjack, roulette and craps, a bouncy
house for children, a raffle and music. A Hawaiian buffet dinner will
be served.
Tickets may be purchased at the Newport Aquatic Center or at the
door. The $30 tickets cover the dinner and $50 in gaming chips.
Children younger than 8 years old are admitted for free.

OCC sailing school offers classes
The Orange Coast College School of Sailing and Seamanship will
offer non-credit classes in marine communications, advanced marine
weather and introductory shields in October. It is also offering a
five-day cruise to the northern Channel Islands.
The communications class will cover VHF equipment, portable and
fixed cell phones and high-gain antennas, Inmarsat satellite
communications and other modes. It meets Thursdays, Oct. 2, 9 and 16
from 7 to 9 p.m. and costs $79.
The weather class takes an in-depth look at high and low pressure
systems, evolution of storms and uses upper-level charts to
understand weather patterns. It will take place Thursdays, Oct. 16,
23, 30, Nov. 6, 13 and 20 from 7 to 9 p.m. and costs $75.
The shields class is a transition course, taking students from
small boats to keel boats of 27 to 30 feet. It meets Fridays, Oct.
17, 24, 31 and Nov. 7 from 1 to 5 p.m. and costs $120.
The Channel Islands cruise will go from Oct. 8 to Oct. 12, aboard
OCC’s cal 48, Glin de Mar. It will explore Anacapa, Santa Cruz and
either Santa Rosa or San Miguel islands and is designed for sailors
with at least intermediate-level skills.
Days will be filled with sailing, hiking and exploring ashore.
Seal rookeries, a petrified forest, Chumash Indian artifacts and
empty white beaches await exploration during shore excursions. The
cost is $625.
