ON THE AGENDA

Here are some items to be considered by the City Council tonight.

BACK BAY SCIENCE CENTER

This afternoon’s study session will include an update on the Back

Bay Science Center, formerly called the Marine Studies Center, which

would be built on Shellmaker Island. The center will be built and

operated in cooperation with other government and environmental

agencies, including the U.S. Department of Fish and Game, and will

provide water-quality research and education facilities.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Tonight’s study session item is just an update for the community

and council members; no action will be taken.

PROCTOR RESIGNATION

Councilman Gary Proctor has announced that he plans to step down

from his council post about a year before his term ends. Now, his

colleagues must decide how to handle the upcoming vacancy. Tonight

they will vote on accepting his resignation and discuss how to go

about choosing a replacement. The council has 30 days after he steps

down on Sept. 30 to appoint a successor. If they don’t appoint

someone within 30 days, the city charter requires that a special

election be held to pick a replacement.

WHAT TO EXPECT

It’s probably safe to bet that council members would rather pick a

replacement themselves than send the matter to a special election.

Tonight’s discussion is likely to focus on the question of how they

will pick someone. For example, they might choose to create a

subcommittee to review applications and narrow down the choices

before bringing the matter to the full council.
