* Newport Harbor High prevailed over Marina, 10-6, despite a
physically imposing Viking defense that limited the Sailors to just
four offensive plays of more than 10 yards, with a long of 17. Upon
further investigation, one discovers the Marina defense operates
under Anger management. That’s right, the Vikings’ defensive
coordinator is Jeff Anger.
* Though Newport Harbor junior receiver Spencer Link was limited
to three catches for 20 yards, he did carry twice for 25 yards and
had a would-be 51-yard touchdown scamper on an end around called back
on a holding call.
* Link’s first carry, a reverse for 15 yards to the Marina 11,
helped set up the first score of the game, a 27-yard Brian Campos
field goal. A big factor in the reverse’s success was a lead block
thrown by quarterback Kasey Peters.
* Corona del Mar High didn’t commit a turnover in Friday’s 22-7
nonleague win over visiting Troy. The only blemish was a botched snap
that quarterback Tom Welch was able to pick up. The Warriors,
however, committed five turnovers, including three fumbles in the
fourth quarter -- one on the CdM 1-yard line and another recovered at
the Sea Kings’ 17 to end promising drives for the visitors.
* CdM has now beat Troy two consecutive years, but in varying
fashion. Last year, the Sea Kings scored 21 fourth-quarter points to
beat the Warriors, 21-12. Friday’s game saw no points scored in the
fourth quarter. After Troy’s first fumble of the fourth quarter, the
Warriors’ only two other offensive plays from scrimmage resulted in
turnovers. The Sea Kings had possession for virtually the final nine
minutes.
* Before the game, CdM players warmed up with red cloths draped
over their helmets. The cloths hid the Sea Kings’ decals, which were
missing from the helmets in Week 1.
* Costa Mesa High played Huntington Beach last week for the first
time since 1966. In three previous meetings between the schools prior
to the Mustangs’ 33-16 victory Thursday, Huntington Beach had
outscored Coast Mesa, 86-13, in winning all three games.
* The last time Estancia High won consecutive games prior the
winning its first two this season was the final three weeks of the
2000 regular season, when the Eagles closed out Pacific Coast League
play with a three-game winning streak.
* Craig Fertig became Estancia’s first coach to win his first two
games at the school.
The only other coach to come close was Phil Brown in 1969, who won
the opener, then tied the second game.
* Sage Hill freshman quarterback Braden Ross was asking to run the
ball, with his team down, 36-0, in the fourth quarter. Ross’ drive
and spunk impressed Lightning Coach Tom Monarch.
“I love to see that,” Monarch said. “That’s a coach’s delight.
I’ve been coaching for 17 years. I’ve coached CIF Division I players
who go on to [NCAA] Division I colleges and they’ve asked to come out
when the game’s decided. [Ross is] the complete opposite. He wanted
the ball and wanted to keep playing.”
