UCI announces institute appointment

UC Irvine announced Tuesday that the college has appointed Albert

F. Yee as director of the UC Irvine Division of the California

Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology.

Last week the institute, which is a joint project between UC

Irvine and UC San Diego, received a $12.5-million grant from the

National Science Foundation to improve communications for first

responders to disasters.

Yee was previously at the University of Michigan and has 32 years

of professional and academic experience. He will also hold a faculty

position in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials

Science in the Henry Samueli School of Engineering.

He will start with UC Irvine Jan. 1, 2004 and will replace William

H. Parker, UC Irvine vice chancellor for research and dean of

graduate studies.

A happy birthday song for the city

Students from 15 Costa Mesa elementary schools will sing “Happy

Birthday Costa Mesa” Friday to celebrate the city’s 50th year of

incorporation.

Victoria school will host the event at 8:15 a.m. during the

school’s flag deck. Costa Mesa Mayor Gary Monahan will help raise the

new city flag and lead the children singing “Happy Birthday.”

A coloring book produced especially for the city’s anniversary

celebration will serve as a tool to teach Costa Mesa history to

children. The Costa Mesa Historical Society and the Historic

Preservation Committee will provide the books to children.

Students will also receive a special birthday cake from

Newport-Mesa Unified School District’s Nutrition Services for lunch.

Chabad Jewish Center to hold services

The Chabad Jewish Center will host free services for Rosh Hashana

and Yom Kippur at the Hyatt Newporter in Newport Beach.

Services for Rosh Hashana will be at 7 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m.

Saturday, with a children’s program at 11 a.m. Services for Yom

Kippur include a Kol Nidrei service at 6 p.m. Oct. 5 and morning

services at 10 a.m. on Oct. 6, with a children’s program at 11 a.m.
