Ocean View seeks help

The Ocean View School District is seeking applicants for its

special education community advisory committee, which consists of

citizens, educators and community agency representatives who are

appointed by the board of trustees.

The committee meets at least four times a year to fulfill the

responsibilities established by the education code. These include

advising the board of trustees, establishing annual priorities,

assisting in parent education, recruiting volunteers, encouraging

community involvement and supporting activities on behalf of

handicapped children.

Parents of school-age children are particularly encouraged to

apply.

Volunteers will have the opportunity to serve the children of the

Ocean View School District and become more informed about services

available throughout the region.

Applications are available at the district office in the student

services department. Information: (714) 847-2551, ext. 1318.

Foundation awards $75,000

Huntington Beach City School District employees received pins from

school board members recognizing up to 30 years of service and more

than $75,000 in teacher grants from the Huntington Beach Education

Foundation at a welcome back tea on Sept. 18.

Teachers selected to receive grants submitted proposals for

funding in a wide range of educational areas such as reading, math,

science, social studies, geography, language and physical education.

In addition, each principal was presented with a $1,500 check to

be used for technology at their schools.

Supt. Gary Rutherford spoke of the difficulty all public school

districts in California are facing this year with diminishing

resources and crippling cuts.

Speaking to a crowd of teachers, administrators, classified staff,

board of education members and PTA presidents, Rutherford encouraged

district staff to foster creative thinking, to recognize ingenuity,

and to support risk-taking and creativity.

In doing so, he introduced the “Radiating Possibilities” employee

recognition program.

“We will seek to identify people and programs who are overcoming

obstacles to achieve great results, inventing solutions to meet

student needs and district priorities, serving as a catalyst to

mobilize others to action and continuous improvement, and aiming for

the remarkable instead of settling for the routine,” Rutherford said.

The Huntington Beach Education Foundation will continue its

fund-raising efforts when it hosts the Gala Centennial Celebration of

the Huntington Beach City School District on Nov. 14.

The event, to be held at the Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort, will

be the central fund-raiser for the foundation that develops

partnerships with businesses, parents and the education community to

fund programs that promote excellence in students’ behavior, attitude

and achievement.
