UC Irvine 4, UC Riverside 2
RIVERSIDE — Senior Matt Murphy scored two goals and had an assist for the No. 23-ranked Anteaters in their Big West Conference match at UCR Soccer Stadium Saturday night.
Murphy, with five points on the night, tied UCI’s all-time points total with 73 in his career matching the total of former Anteaters Brad Evans and P.J. Polowski. He also recorded the game-winning goal and tied Evans for the career mark in that category with 10.
UCI junior Carlos Aguilar took a cross from Murphy and scored in the 28th minute to give the Anteaters a 1-0 lead, but the Highlanders tied it up in the 42nd minute.
Murphy put UCI back up 2-1 as he converted a penalty kick in the 62nd minute. Cesar Dias of the Highlanders was given a red card in the 80th minute forcing UCR to play a man down the rest of the way. Murphy would again score in the 82nd minute to give UCI a 3-1 lead as he converted a free kick from just outside the box.
Freshman Norby Rodriguez put UCI up 4-1 in the 89th minute as he got an assist from senior Michael Willrich. UCI improved to 8-1-3, 1-1-1 in conference.
The ’Eaters return to action Wednesday, when they play host to Cal State Fullerton at 7 p.m.
Vanguard 2, The Master’s 0
SANTA CLARITA — Sophomore Scott Falkner scored a goal and added an assist to help the visiting Lions extend their unbeaten streak to six straight matches and remain unbeaten in the Golden State Athletic Conference Saturday.
Falkner, who came into the game without having produced a point this season, scored an unassisted goal in the 18th minute. He then had the assist on senior Tom Culver’s goal in the 81st minute.
Sophomore goalie Trevor Herrera made four saves to earn his fourth shutout of the season for Vanguard (6-3-2, 4-0-1 in conference). The unranked Lions remain atop the GSAC standings.
Vanguard’s unbeaten streak includes five victories and a 0-0 tie.
The Master’s, which outshot Vanguard, 11-8, fell to 7-1-2, 2-1-1.

UC Irvine def. UC Davis
DAVIS — Lauren Kellerman led the Anteaters with 15 kills and Kari Pestolesi recorded her 11th double-double of the season with 12 kills and 10 digs in UCI’s Big West Conference sweep Saturday.
Setter Taryn Robertson handed out 40 assists and picked up five digs to help the Anteaters win, 25-17, 25-19, 25-21. Libero Devon Sutherland contributed 13 digs, sharing the team-high with Alexandra Filkins, who notched a career-high.
UCI improved to 8-10, 3-2 in conference.
Azusa Pacific def. Vanguard
COSTA MESA — Kelsey Wirt led the No. 8-ranked Lions with 14 kills, but the No. 14-ranked Tigers scored the 25-20, 25-18, 13-25, 32-30 Golden State Athletic Conference upset Saturday at the Pit.
Heather DeJongh added 13 kills and Jessica Roy had 11 kills for Vanguard (11-4, 6-4 in conference). Jamie Heenan, a Newport Harbor High product, had eight kills. Meghan Walsh led with 14 digs, while Wirt had 13 digs and Alexandra Griffiths finished with 10.

SANTA CLARITA — The visiting Lions had 19 shots to just 10 for the Mustangs in the Golden State Athletic Conference contest Saturday.
Freshman Cayla White scored for the Lions, with an assist by sophomore Danielle Dintino, in the 41st minute. But the tally only cut into a 2-0 deficit created when the hosts scored in the third minute, then added insurance in the 17th minute.
Mustangs goalie Maria Loza made nine saves to drop the Lions to 6-3-2, 1-3-1.
The Master’s improved to 8-3, 3-1.
WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY
Triton Classic
LA JOLLA — Senior Megan Fairley finished 17th in a 126-runner field to lead UC Irvine to a sixth-place finish in the 14-team event Saturday at UC San Diego.
Fairley completed the 6,000-meter course in 23 minutes, 15.1 seconds.
Other Anteaters included sophomore Shelby Pock (41st in 24:17.2), sophomore Stephanie Sconberg (43rd, 24:27.5), Katie Borum (57th, 24:56.5), and sophomore Jessica Vaughan (71st, 25:18.7.
Jessica Pixler of Seattle Pacific was the winner in 21:12.3.
UCI finished with 231 points while Alaska-Anchorage won the team title with 87.
Vanguard Invitational
COSTA MESA — Fitsum Tesfa finished fourth and led the Vanguard men to a fourth-place finish out 10 teams in the 8K run at Fairview Park Saturday.
Tesfa came across in 25 minute, 33 seconds. Christian de Glymes took eighth for the Lions, finishing in 26:03.
Rebecca Sopp led the Vanguard women, finishing 14th in 18:38 in the 5K race. The Lions finished seventh out of 11 teams.

SoCal Tournament
MALIBU — Junior James Frank scored a career-high seven goals to help No. 8-ranked UC Irvine defeat Pomona-Pitzer, 17-4, Saturday, after falling earlier in the day, 11-10, to No, 7-ranked UC Santa Barbara at Pepperdine University.
Frank scored four goals in the second half to help the Anteaters improve to 3-7 and advance to today’s ninth-place semifinal at noon against Redlands at Loyola Marymount’s Burns Aquatic Center.
Brandon Johnson added three goals and junior Thomas Kruip had two as eight different players scored for UCI.
Against Santa Barbara, UCI junior Greg Enloe scored with 4:19 remaining to tie the score at 9-9, but the Gauchos scored the next two goals and held on to earn their second win in three meetings with UCI this season.
