Titan Invitational

FULLERTON — Freshman Sam Hyams won the men’s race in leading UC Irvine to the title Friday at the Cal State Fullerton campus course.

Hyams posted a time of 25 minutes, 38 secondsd over 8,000 meters as the Anteaters totaled 36 points. The Men of Troy were second with 62 and the Cal Coast Track Club third with 102.

UCI’s Aman Bhatia finished 15th (26:01.5), Solomon Tesfaye was 16th (26:06.0), Greg Thompson 20th (26:19.6) and Brett Matejka 26th (26:33.7) to complete the ’Eaters’ top five.

UCI senior Erinn Kim won the women’s 5,000-meter race with a time of 18:11.9 as the Anteaters finished second in the team competition with 60 points. Loyola Marymount won the meet with 38 points and Pepperdine was third with 62.

Stephanie Sconberg of UCI finished 28th in 19:25.3, Katie Borum was 37th (19:46.2), Shelby Pock 38th (19:49.7) and Jessica Vaughan 41st (19:54.5) to round out the Anteaters’ top five runners.

The UCI men’s and women’s teams compete in the Big West Conference Championships Saturday at UC Riverside.

MEN’S WATER POLO

UC Irvine 13, Concordia 8

IRVINE — Anteaters sophomore Brandon Johnson tied his career high with six goals for the second straight game in nonconference action at Anteater Pool Friday night.

Johnson scored three goals in each half as UCI (9-8) won for the seventh time in its last eight games. Greg Enloe added three goals for the ninth-ranked ’Eaters.

Duje Grubisic led Concordia (15-11) with four goals, three coming on penalty shots, and Derrek Danna added a pair of goals.

Back-to-back goals in the second quarter by Enloe (3:36) and Johnson (:54) on the power play snapped a 4-4 tie and gave UCI a 6-4 halftime lead.

The Anteaters led, 10-7, after three quarters and scored the first three goals in the fourth period, the last coming from Johnson with 3:01 remaining for a 13-7 margin.

Grubisic closed out the scoring by converting a penalty shot with 1:07 left.

Matt Johnson had seven saves in goal for UCI while the Eagles’ Barrett Carlton had five.

UCI travels to second-ranked Stanford Saturday for a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game at 11 a.m.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Orange Coast def. Riverside

COSTA MESA — Sophomore Jessica Bodkin had nine kills to help lead the Pirates to a 25-19, 25-15, 25-12 Orange Empire Conference win Friday night.

Rachel Freeno added eight kills and a team-high eight digs, while Emily Lyon dished out 31 assists for OCC (13-2, 5-2 in conference).

OCC libero Amanda Cheseborough added eight digs

The Pirates return to action on Wednesday night at home against Fullerton at 7.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Orange Coast 1, Riverside 1

COSTA MESA — Beth Krikorian scored in the 90th minute to help the Pirates tie the Orange Empire Conference match Friday.

Kaleigh Trider assisted on the goal.
