Biola Invitational

ORANGE — Vanguard University freshman Fitsum Tesfa finished first to lead the Lions to the men’s team title Saturday at Irvine Regional Park.

Tesfa completed the 8,000-meter course in 24 minutes, 50.1 seconds, more than 18 seconds better than the runner-up.

Christian De Glymes (sixth in 25:59.8), Matt Johnson (13th, 26:27.3), Mike Hartanov (15th, 26:37.9), Darren Bruneck (22nd, 27:25.9) and Chad Smith (33rd, 28:13) also contributed for the winners.

The Vanguard women finished fifth, led by senior Rebecca Sopp, who was fourth with a 5,000-meter time of 18:25.4.

Megan Williams (eighth, 18:35.1) and Chelsea Van Cott (21st, 19:28.3) also stood out for the Lions.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. UC Riverside

IRVINE — Kari Pestolesi and Shannan Homan had eight kills each to lead the Anteaters to a 25-9, 25-9, 25-16 Big West Conference win Saturday.

Lauren Kellerman and Alexandra Filkins had five kills each, while Taryn Robertson added 25 assists for UCI (10-11, 5-3 in conference). Pestolesi also had five ace serves and Devon Sutherland, who led with nine digs had four aces.

COSTA MESA — Heather DeJongh had 14 kills to lead the No. 12-ranked Lions to a 25-13, 24-7, 30-32, 25-13 Golden State Athletic Conference win Saturday.

Michal Shortridge and Kelsey Wirt had nine kills each, while Meghan Walsh added 45 assists for Vanguard (13-6, 8-6 in conference). Alexandra Griffiths had a match-high 20 digs.

MEN’S SOCCER

UC Irvine 1, UC Davis 1

DAVIS — Sophomore forward Spencer Thompson scored the Anteaters’ only goal in the 17th minute of the Big West Conference road meeting Saturday.

Dylan Curtis knotted the score in the 50th minute for the Aggies and both teams failed to score through two overtime periods.

No. 20-ranked UCI is now 8-1-6, 1-1-4 in conference, while No. 8-ranked Davis is 12-2-3, 4-1-3.

Freshman Andrew Fontein had five saves for UCI.

Senior Matt Murphy earned an assist on UCI’s goal.

COSTA MESA — Luis Macias, Landon Herrera and Ryan Kenney all scored for the Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference contest Saturday at Vanguard.

Kenney, Tamislav Colic and Victor Tapia each had assists for the winners (8-4-2, 6-1-1 in conference), ranked No. 14 in the NAIA.

COSTA MESA — Freshman Gabriella Valles scored twice to help lift the host Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference clash Saturday.

Michelle Davis and Rachel Fields added goals for the winners (7-4-3, 2-4-2 in conference), who received assists from Danielle Dintino and Elin Sandgren. Jillian Foss made 11 saves to preserve the shutout.
