Boys’ basketball: Crespi wants to play in Open Division for state playoffs

Right now, a red-hot Crespi team, 28-4 overall and winner of the Southern Section Open Division consolation title, is expected to be the No. 1 seed in Division I for the Southern California Regionals when state playoff pairings are announced on Sunday.
But Crespi Coach Russell White said he would be happy for his team to be placed in the Open Division, where Chino Hills is unbeaten and is expected to be very tough to beat.
“We want to play the best,” White said. “We want the challenge. We’re playng well.”
There’s still an outside chance of Crespi getting into the Open Division if one of the eight teams expected to be selected doesn’t fit Open Division criteria.
With Crespi’s outstanding guard duo of De’Anthony Melton, Brandon Williams and Taj Regans, the Celts might be a formidable challenger to Chino Hills.
Otherwise, Division I should be very competitive.
