Boys’ basketball: Verdugo Hills sets up East Valley showdown with Poly

Verdugo Hills stayed unbeaten in the East Valley League on Wednesday, pulling out a 67-65 overtime win over Grant. The win sends the Dons into a showdown game with Sun Valley Poly on Friday at Poly. The Parrots are also unbeaten but need a win over Arleta on Thursday.
Leoni Aleksan hit a game-tying 25-footer with two seconds left in regulation for the Dons. He finished with 12 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Adrian Gutierrez had 28 points and 14 rebounds. Shane Hughes added 17 points. Tai Gonen led Grant with 19 points.
In the Western League, Fairfax improved to 21-0 with a 74-44 win over Palisades. Donald Gipson, Lindsey Drew and Foster Dixson each scored 11 points. LACES stunned University, 71-64.
In the West Valley League, El Camino Real defeated Granada Hills, 86-57. Chris Terry finished with 19 points. Taft defeated Chatsworth, 55-53. Travis Patrick had 17 points and 13 rebounds for Taft against his former school. Darrius Henderson added 18 points. Cleveland defeated Birmingham, 56-45.
In the Coliseum League, Crenshaw defeated Fremont, 63-57.
In the Valley Mission League, Sylmar took over sole possession of first place with a 56-50 win over Van Nuys.
