Tiger Woods will have to wait a day to reclaim No. 1 ranking

Tiger Woods will have to wait another day in his attempt to reclaim the No. 1 ranking in the world as a strong thunderstorm has delayed play Sunday in the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill in Orlando, Fla.

The course, which had to be cleared when a tornado warning was issued, and there will not be enough time for all the golfers to finish the final round Sunday.

[Update, 1:30 p.m.: The tournament has been suspended until Monday because of standing water on several holes following heavy rains.]

It will be the third time this year that a PGA Tour event has been extended into the next week, including a victory by Woods at Torrey Pines in late January.

Woods and playing partner Rickie Fowler completed only two holes in the final round when an extended delay began. Woods birdied the second hole to move to 12 under par for the event, which he has won seven times.

Fowler, Keegan Bradley, John Huh and Ken Duke are three shots back at nine under. Justin Rose is in a group of five players at eight under.

If Woods wins for a PGA Tour record-tying eighth time at Bay Hill, he’ll have the No. 1 ranking for the first time since October 2010, a month before revelations of extramarital affairs that unraveled his life as well as his game.

Sam Snead, the only player with more PGA Tour wins than Woods (82 to 76), won the Greater Greensboro Open eight times from 1938 to 1965. Woods has won four different tournaments seven times.
