Phil Mickelson sharpens his ping-pong skills for President’s Cup

Golf isn’t the only game at the President’s Cup this week.

Over the years, members of the American squad have shared a passion for ping-pong, spending their off-time battling each other on a table in the team room.

Matt Kuchar is considered the best among them, but now Phil Mickelson is getting some help.

“There were some reports that I took some lessons for pong prior to this tournament, and those reports would be correct,” Mickelson said from Muirfield Village, where Cup play began on Thursday.

The three-time Masters winner has yet to test his new game.

“I haven’t really been playing any matches, been taking it easy, again, working on the fundamentals, but it seems like it’s coming around,” he said. “I’m ready for the challenge with some of the players.”

In the meantime, Mickelson teed off with Keegan Bradley in Thursday’s four-ball competition against Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel of the international team.

Other pairings included Tiger Woods and Kuchar versus Angel Cabrera and Marc Leishman.
