Marlins’ Jose Fernandez reportedly faces elbow surgery

Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez has a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right arm and needs surgery, according to a report on CBSSports.com.

The website reported that Fernandez, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list because of a sprained right elbow Monday, will get a second opinion from the Marlins’ team doctor after another physician discovered a tear in the UCL in his pitching arm and recommended surgery. Also, ESPN magazine quoted National League sources as saying that Fernandez would need season-ending elbow surgery.

The Marlins have not confirmed the reports that Fernandez has a torn ligament and faces surgery.

Milwaukee outfielder Ryan Braun, sidelined since April 26 by a strained muscle in his rib cage, was activated Tuesday, but Aramis Ramirez, the Brewers’ third baseman and cleanup hitter, was placed on the DL because of a strained left hamstring. . . .
