Carolina Railhawks defeat Chivas USA, 3-1, in U.S. Open Cup game

CARY, N.C. -- Cesar Elizondo scored to go-ahead goal in extra time Wednesday night to lead the Carolina Railhawks to a 3-1 victory over Chivas USA in the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup.
Brian Ackley added an insurance goal for the NASL team with a header off Floyd Franks’ corner kick later in extra time.
Ty Shipalane put Carolina ahead in the 13th minute, scoring on a one-touch assist from Brian Shriver.
Chivas tied the score in the 57th when Walter Vilchez Soto headed in Carlos Alvarez’s free kick from the right sideline.
Carolina, which beat the Los Angeles Galaxy in the third round for the second consecutive year on May 29, will play at either Real Salt Lake or the USL Pro Charleston Battery in a quarterfinal on June 26.
