Already the repository of several monuments of national significance, the National Mall in Washington, D.C., is set to become home to the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial -- the first monument at the Mall to honor “a man of hope, a man of peace, and a man of color,” according to the foundation that built it.
The official dedication takes place Aug. 28 on the 48th anniversary of the historic “I Have a Dream” speech delivered by King on the steps of the nearby Lincoln Memorial.
The four-acre site in a bend of the Tidal Basin was designed by a San Francisco-based group. It contains an inscription wall with engraved quotes, a bookstore, visitors center and an outsized statue of King set amid cherry trees, water and stone features.
Visitors may register for an online lottery until 11:59 p.m. EDT on May 31 to request up to six free tickets for reserved seats and standing room. Recipients will be notified by email on June 15. Unreserved public areas will also be available for the ceremony and the musical tributes before and after the dedication.
