Reporting from Las Vegas — Sonny Turner, former lead singer of the Platters, returns to Las Vegas on Sept. 19 to play the Suncoast Showroom.
Turner made his musical debut in 1959 when he was picked from 100 prospects to replace the Platters’ original lead singer, Tony Williams.
By 19, Turner had toured the world with the Platters and gained popularity with the hits “I Love You 1000 Times,” “With This Ring,” and “Washed Ashore.” He also re-recorded the group’s hits before he joined the Platters, including “Only You,” “The Great Pretender” and “The Magic Touch.”
Turner left the group in 1970 to start a solo career and found his own fan base. His vocals can be heard on the soundtracks of movies “The Nutty Professor II” starring Eddie Murphy, “Hearts in Atlantis” starring Anthony Hopkins and “Prince of the City” starring Robert DeNiro.
Tickets start at $15.95.
Tickets: Suncoast Box Office, (702) 284-7777
